Baseball Blues

Today was supposed to be the opening of the 2020 baseball season for the COLORADO Rockies. In a world free of coronavirus the Rockies would have started a series with the Padres in San Diego.

But today the bats are silent and the roar of the crowd is missing. Our national pastime is on coronavirus hiatus. There is no crying in baseball, but maybe today just a little.

The Rockies won’t be playing games anytime soon.  The home opener on April 3rd has already been postponed.

So there will be no joy in Denver because baseball can’t beat a contagious virus that threatens us all.

It’s sad. Opening Day in Denver is almost like a holiday . The stadium is sold out and the Lodo bars are packed with a sea of people dressed in Rockies purple. We’re going to miss that right of Spring . It’s when hope springs eternal that our team has a shot at going to the World Series.

Major League Baseball says the games will eventually return. The most optimistic guess is that it could be sometime in May.

To use a famous baseball line …fans everywhere are saying “Say it ain’t so Joe, say it ain’t so.”

I close with this from Field of Dreams on why this is such a loss:

“The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it’s part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good and can be again.  Oh people will come,Ray. People will most definitely come.” Terence Mann. Aka James Earl Jones
